I find this poem a good representation of the experience of women, such as my grandmother Velma, who had loved ones in the armed forces fighting overseas in the Great War of Nations.

With apologies for the typos in my comment – the final phrase should have read “relate it to the time of our ancestors in wartime”.

Thank you for your comment, Susan. I was particularly struck by how ordinary, even petty, the details of the tea were, contrasted with the enormity of what these women were experiencing in losing loved ones to war.
